LIBERTY Galati implements new air preheating technology at Blast Furnace to reduce carbon emissions
- Blast Furnace gases will replace natural gas, reducing energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions
A team of specialists from LIBERTY Galați has recently completed a modernization project which will reduce bot the energy consumption for hot metal production at the plant’s Blast Furnace no. 5 and the carbon emissions.
The project, carried out by blast furnaces operators, project managers and automation engineers from the plant, means the air injected into the blast furnace is no longer preheated using the classic mixture of blast-furnace gas and methane gas, but an optimized mix of oxygen-enriched air, blast-furnace gas and methane gas – reducing the latter by 75% compared to the old solution.
Under the new system, lines have been made to inject, in a controlled manner and completely safely, oxygen into the combustion air used in the hot stoves of the blast furnace. This equipment is fully automated and equipped with state-of-the-art safety, measurement and control elements.
Bogdan Grecu, C.E.O. of LIBERTY Galați, stated: ”This type of project, which continues our modernization process, shows the high level of technical excellence we have here at the Steel Plant as well as our determination to strengthen our energy efficiency and further improve our environmental performance. We continue to work on other similar projects, which we are implementing throughout the company.”
