LIBERTY Galati Summer School to start its second decade
- 37 students from across Romania will spend ten weeks at the steelworks learning about the future of steel
- 440 students have graduated LIBERTY Galati’s Summer School since it was started in 2012
LIBERTY Galati started the eleventh term of its Summer School with 37 students working at the steelworks. For ten weeks, the students will get involved in projects with highly experienced mentors across the LIBERTY Galati business.
The aim of the Summer School project is for students to understand the steel industry and to contribute with innovative ideas as the industry transforms to a low carbon future. The Summer School is part of the Internship programme under the umbrella of GREENSTEEL LIBERTY Galati Academy which intends to attract young specialists into the plant and the industry and strengthen the ties with the higher education system.
Ajay Aggarwal, European President for LIBERTY Steel Group and Chairman of the Board LIBERTY Galați, said to the students joining the programme: “Congratulations to you all and welcome to this prestigious programme. With a history of more than 55 years in steelmaking, Liberty Galati is now aiming toward revolutionizing the steel industry and transforming it into a carbon-neutral future by 2030. The new technologies we intend to implement are unique both in Europe and globally – and our GREENSTEEL plans will make history in Galati. We invite you to be part of it. Our people play a key role in this journey and upskilling the existing workforce is a priority for us, but we also need the support of the young generation who can contribute with innovative ideas and solutions. We welcome you to LIBERTY Galati and invite more young people to enjoy this summer experience, to learn, grow, have fun and eventually stay with us. I would like to thank LIBERTY mentors for taking the time to share their expertise with the young generation“.
Since its launch, 440 students have graduated the Summer School with 150 eventually joining the company which offered them real-life and business experience. More broadly, almost 1,000 students have attended the Thematic Sessions organized on the Plant, 500 of them have conducted their traineeship along with the company’s specialists, and almost 70 students benefited from scholarships granted by LIBERTY Galati.
Earlier this week, LIBERTY Galati launched the tender process for the supply of hybrid electric furnace technology as it aims to transform its operations to GREENSTEEL and take a big step in meeting its target to become carbon neutral by 2030. The transformation programme will be supported by the GREENSTEEL Academy which aims to upskill the plant’s current workforce and encourage new people into the industry and by the GFG Foundation which will be running a range of programmes with Romanian technical educational environment, aimed at educating the young generation and developing the local communities.
This year GFG Foundation in partnership with LIBERTY Galati launched for the first time, a class in a dual education system at the “Paul Dimo” Technological high-school, offering learning and development opportunities for young people. 20 students in the ninth grade, who specialise in the electrical field, will benefit from scholarships provided by the GFG Foundation and the dual learning merging theoretical knowledge taught by teachers with practical activities carried out by LIBERTY Galati mentors.
