Metal making

Raw and recycled steel materials for the global metal making industry.

LIBERTY’s mining, recycling and commodities businesses source, produce and distribute raw materials, iron ore and coking coal which are used by the steelmaking and other metal producing industries globally. In addition to this, LIBERTY also supplies copper, nickel, zinc, tin and other metals to an international customer base through its many offices and representatives.

LIBERTY’s recycling arm has a well-established position globally supplying steel making raw materials to domestic and international mills. Handling over 3 million tonnes a year of ferrous material it is a significant contributor to the raw material requirements of the steel industry and provides a sustainable alternative to landfill capturing the full value in use of the materials recycled.

LIBERTY’s mining business is a part of its integrated supply chain and currently produces approximately 10m tonnes of iron ore and metallurgical coal per annum for both internal and external customers. The iron ore mining business operates primarily in the Middleback Ranges, located 60 kilometres from LIBERTY ’s Primary Steel Whyalla facilities in Australia.

LIBERTY also owns a portfolio of non-ferrous mining assets located in South Australia. This includes the Ardrossan Dolomite Mine – which supplies dolomite flux to LIBERTY’s Whyalla Steelworks – as well as a collection of copper-gold exploration projects.

In addition, LIBERTY operates the Tahmoor coking coal mine in New South Wales in Australia. With an annual production of 2m tonnes per annum, the bulk of its products are used for primary steel making in blast furnaces both in Australia and internationally.
