Our Commitment to Green Steel
The world cannot live without steel, but as it is responsible for almost a tenth of humanity’s carbon emissions, the planet cannot live with it. Something must change.
Our plan to transition to GREENSTEEL
It is an immense, intricate challenge as traditional practices cannot be abandoned overnight. We have developed an intelligent transition strategy for each of our industrial brands to safeguard a better future for generations to come whilst continuing to deliver specialised, performance-driven solutions for customers today:
- Pioneering the use of Electric Arc Furnaces (EAFs), significantly lowering levels of embodied carbon to those in traditional steel making.
- Operating scrap metal recycling centres internationally to feed our EAFs, further lowering emissions, saving on natural resources and diverting scrap from landfill.
- Implementing biochar solutions and aiming to replace natural gas with lower emissions gases such as hydrogen.
- Transitioning our remaining blast furnace to the latest EAF technology, fed by renewable energy sources.
- Reformulating our own products so they use less raw materials, have reduced embodied carbon, yet achieve the same structural performance.
- Lowest carbon aluminium in Europe by integrating manufacturing with renewable hydropower and responsible land management.
Through this transition strategy we will achieve our ambition of becoming carbon neutral by 2030.

GFG Foundation
The GFG Foundation seeks to inspire, empower, and enable young people in industrial communities to reach their life and employment potential. We do this through running school programmes in areas where GFG Alliance has a significant presence. These programmes give students some important skills to help them towards being job-ready after school. These include STEM based learning programmes, designed to involve students in problem solving real-world issues that are happening in their local communities.
