LIBERTY Ostrava has invested CZK 76 million to extend the production of threaded bars for construction

Since the beginning of April LIBERTY Ostrava has extended the production of threaded bars, a high-added-value product, of which it is the only manufacturer in the Czech Republic. To extend the production of one of the most widely used reinforcing and anchoring systems in the world, the mill has invested more than CZK 76 million in the last year so that it can now tailor the product to customers´ precise needs.

The threaded bars are used primarily in building construction, to support underground boring works and the geotechnical construction, such as those used in mining, tunnels or underground projects. Beyond that, they are also suitable for special use as in the anchoring of rocks or clipping rock massifs.

„The bars are equipped with a special continuous thread, which allows them to screw on nuts and other accessories, enabling bar connection without welding. Thus, their installation is quicker, which saves time and material on construction sites,” explains Pavel Suchánek, head of production.

The mill produces threaded bars in diameters 15-75 mm and up to 24 meters long. These bars are cut to the required lengths by two sawing machines. By applying a newly developed, specialist cement mortar, it is possible to achieve up to 100 year-long anti-corrosion protection depending on the type of construction, which provides the bars with an even longer lifetime. In addition to the threaded bars, the mill will now offer all kinds of connection material as well. At first the mill wants to supply its European customers with 20 thousand tonnes of threaded bars annually, before increasing this volume as demand increases.

„In addition to our investment in the mill a special vehicle worth CZK 13.5 million was also purchased, which is being tailor-made for our needs and will be able to transport bars up to 25 meters long. It will be delivered in July,” adds Petr Kraina, threaded bar extension project manager.

The steelwork’s threaded bar production line was launched in 2014, and the bars manufactured in Ostrava were sent to the then sister company in Rodange, Luxemburg, where they were processed further to customers’ requirements. Now, the whole process of threaded bars production, treatment and fitting including the shipment to customers will be taking place in Ostrava.
