LIBERTY Dunaújváros to close its coke ovens

LIBERTY Dunaújváros has now started the process of closing its two coke oven batteries, which have become increasingly inefficient and difficult to maintain safely as well as being loss-making, due to excess production capacities on the market.

Coke production will end on 12 June although the closure process will take several months, in collaboration with the relevant authorities, to ensure it is done in the safest and most environmentally effective way. The closure of the coke batteries will also lead to a significant reduction on the CO2 and dust emissions from the plant, which will be a major benefit to the local community.

The Company will make all efforts to reskill and redeploy the affected employees to other business activities. Accordingly, the Company will engage with the trade unions and authorities to develop a transition plan.

LIBERTY still intends to invest massively in the transformation of LIBERTY Dunaújváros’ into a carbon-neutral steel producer over the next five years, the largest investment in the business in a generation. LIBERTY recently signed a contract with CISDI Engineering to finalise the full feasibility study for the installation of the electric arc furnace technology at Dunaújváros. LIBERTY Dunaújváros’s green steel transformation will reduce direct CO2 emissions by approximately 80%.
