Częstochowa steelworks celebrates a full year within LIBERTY Group

  • Since acquisition by LIBERTY, the plant has now reached its highest production levels since 2017
  • Range of reopening, modernisation and decarbonisation projects completed to support new “55-65-85” production strategy
  • Restart of local community investment and partnerships

LIBERTY Częstochowa, the largest Polish producer of low-carbon GREENSTEEL, is celebrating a successful first year of full ownership by  LIBERTY Steel Group. In the first year of operation under the LIBERTY brand, production at the Huta is now at its highest levels since 2017 with more than 500,000 tonnes of GREENSTEEL slabs produced from its EAF and almost 400,000 tonnes of GREENSTEEL plate produced in its Heavy Plate Mill.

The increase in the plant’s production has been possible thanks to a range of operational restarts and modernisation projects including: the restart the prefabrication plant; the modernisation of the Continuous Steel Casting line, Rolling line and Cutting lines no. 1 and no. 2; as well as the increase in effectiveness of the production process. With the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030, a photovoltaic farm was also launched at the plant in February with the installation of another solar farm planned this year, which once completed will provide the LIBERTY Częstochowa with approximately 3 MW of renewable energy capacity.

These investments will support the company’s “55-65-85″ strategy, which is targeting shipments of 85,000 tonnes of GREENSTEEL plates per month.

The business has also worked hard over the year to reinvigorate its partnerships with local community groups and educational establishments, having signed cooperation agreements with the Częstochowa University of Technology and the University of Jan Długosz to allow their students to undergo internships and doctoral internships at the plant, whole joint research programmes are also planned.

Krishnamoorthy Venkatasubramanian, the Executive Director of Liberty Częstochowa, said: “The first year of LIBERTY Częstochowa’s operation was a challenge that the entire Huta team has more than overcome. On this occasion, I would like to thank all employees for their commitment and hard work. We have managed to achieve ambitious goals together – in terms of production levels, modernisation and setting new standards of work safety. I am convinced that this is just the beginning, and LIBERTY Częstochowa will soon become the GREENSTEEL production leader in this part of Europe and a trusted partner for the Polish government in the implementation of its major  infrastructure projects.”
