LIBERTY Speciality Steel has started a significant repair project at the Melting Shop in Rotherham (ACP), marking an important step forward for the business. The ongoing works on the ACP roof are part of a wider plan to support the safe restart of Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) steelmaking.
This repair is both technically complex and operationally important. Due to the scale of the structure and the location above critical equipment, the project required careful planning over an extended period. A dedicated team, led by ACP’s Site Structural Lead Engineer Nathan McCall, has been responsible for the technical planning, safety assessments, and day-to-day supervision of the work.
The repair is being carried out in partnership with long-established contractors Elliot & Wragg, Altofix, specialists in industrial and rope-access projects and Bardon Environmental, Asbestos specialists.
Together, they are working to restore around 1,200 square metres of roofing. This includes the replacement of reinforced concrete panels, structural steelwork, and re-felting, along with key environmental infrastructure such as the fume hood — essential for capturing furnace emissions and ensuring compliance with environmental standards.
The repair is being carried out in several phases. The first stage, involving re-felting and steelwork, is already complete. The next stage focuses on refurbishing the fume hood, with work expected to continue into mid to late May.
Final tasks will include replacement of roof sheeting to ensure the building is secure and weather-tight — a critical factor for maintaining operational safety and equipment reliability.
Nathan McCall commented: “This is a carefully managed project involving close coordination between our in-house teams and specialist contractors. It’s a key part of preparing the site for future operations.”
The ACP roof repair forms part of LIBERTY’s broader restructuring efforts and reflects a considered approach to returning the business to a stable footing. While further work is planned in the months ahead, this project signals real progress and underlines the company’s commitment to safe operations, environmental responsibility, and long-term sustainability.
As these works continue, LIBERTY Speciality Steel remains focused on rebuilding its production capabilities and supporting the people and communities connected to its operations.
