Job Description
Liberty Speciality Steels produces a wide range of carbon, alloy and stainless steels for applications in the aerospace, oil & gas, industrial bearings, automotive and other high integrity engineering markets. The Technical function conducts metallurgical investigations to support two primary goals. Firstly the development of new products and new business to ensure Liberty Speciality Steels has a sustainable future; and secondly identifying metallurgical improvements to reduce cost, improve product quality and enhance customer service. Technical activities include interpreting customer and end user requirements; technical commissioning of new equipment, revising manufacturing processes and conducting capability reviews, all in the pursuit of manufacturing high quality products.
Technical excellence is at the heart of everything we do, underpinning areas including customer service, production, quality assurance, laboratory management, non-destructive testing and order recruitment. In a Technical role you will need highly developed analytical skills, an aptitude for problem-solving, the ability to influence those around you, and first-rate project management and organisational skills. These skills will be supported by an interest in science, a desire to learn and innovate, and the drive to achieve results in often challenging situations.
Metallurgical knowledge is acquired through on the job training. Technical roles are broadly categorised as product development, process development and research. Some roles being “generalist” and some “specialist” in nature. Whichever remit you favour you will find yourself working alongside Technical, Commercial, Supply Chain and Production colleagues.
As with all roles in a large organisation we need excellent communicators who enjoy working in a team. If you are excited about Materials Engineering, want to apply this in a manufacturing environment and have the determination to study a degree whilst gaining some unique experience then this is the Higher Apprenticeship for you!
