Introducing the Steel Town Podcast: A glimpse into the heart of steelmaking in Whyalla
GFG Alliance has launched Steel Town, a new podcast series that takes listeners into the world of mining and steelmaking in Whyalla, home to the iconic steelworks that have dominated the city’s skyline since 1941.
Steel Town aims to give a detailed and personal insight into the steelmaking process, from the challenges of production to the passion of the skilled workers behind it. Each episode will provide a window into Whyalla’s vital role in steel production and the community that drives its success.
Episode 1, From a Tuyere to a Taphole
We hear from GFG Alliance Chairman Sanjeev Gupta, who shares his passion for steelmaking and the challenges faced by the industry. “This town is not going anywhere, this steelworks is not going anywhere, LIBERTY is not going anywhere … It has made steel for the last 60 years and it will make steel for 60 more years and beyond in the future. For now, we need to focus on getting this blast furnace running, that’s our primary target. In due course, green steel will come.” Sanjeev says, setting the tone for the episode.
We also hear from the team behind the blast furnace, including Blast Furnace Manager William Cunningham, who talks about the pride of seeing the first liquid iron flow from the taphole: “You work so hard for it, and to see that first liquid flowing out of the taphole is just a marvellous thing to see.” Danielle Bateman, Community and Stakeholder Coordinator, also shares her dedication to the community, while Head of Sales Daniel Coghlan discusses the significance of Whyalla steel in projects across the country.

We also hear from Operations Manager Nick Laube, who explains the importance of the steelmaking plant’s position in the process and highlights some of the products produced, including music wire, piano wire, automotive suspension, and even shopping trolleys.
Additionally, the episode explores GFG’s exciting innovations, such as its move into the solar sector, and features community leaders discussing the importance of collaboration and giving back to the region.
