LIBERTY Galati GREENSTEEL transformation plan
LIBERTY Steel Group plans to invest in the LIBERTY Galati GREENSTEEL transformation programme over the next eight years. The key element of that programme is installation of two electric arc furnaces, a DRI plant and an integrated MI.DA minimill – with the potential to increase the production up to 4 MTPA.
The new furnaces are expected to reduce CO2 emissions per tonne of steel by around 80%, and – once the plant has transitioned to using green Hydrogen – the carbon emissions will be virtually zero.
To maximise the plant’s consumption of renewable power and reduce overall electricity consumption, LIBERTY Galati will install a 180MW solar park and 20MW wind park, developed under SIMEC brand. The transformation programme will be supported by the GREENSTEEL Academy and the GFG Foundation which is already running a range of programmes with Romanian universities and colleges aimed at educating the young generation and developing the local communities.
The GREENSTEEL programme will deliver:
|Energy efficiency projects and CO2 reduction on existing processes|
|2 electric arc furnaces - reducing CO2 emissions per tonne of steel produced by up to 80%|
|A Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) plant, initially using Natural Gas as a transitional fuel before using green Hydrogen|
|An integrated MI.DA Minimill, with the potential to increase production up to 4Mtpa from 3MTpa, with the extra volume focused on long products|
|Value-added projects at flat rolling mills, to access new markets|
|A 180MW solar farm and a 20MW wind farm on site|
|Supported by the GREENSTEEL Academy|
