LIBERTY Steel UK is seeking to transform steel manufacturing into a global product and technology leader through its GREENSTEEL strategies.
GREENSTEEL aims to recycle and upcycle the growing amount of scrap steel, using electric arc furnaces powered by renewable energy. Raw materials and resources are secured locally to make steel products that are sold both nationally and globally. High grade engineered steel and alloys from the process feed downstream operations that make advanced components for demanding sectors such as automotive, aerospace, marine, off-road and defence.
GREENSTEEL provides a more flexible and customer focused solution while also reducing the carbon footprint of manufacture, shortening the supply chain, retaining and upgrading skills, stimulating new technologies and engendering a sustainable and globally competitive metal manufacturing sector.
GREENSTEEL’s potential in Britain
Low-carbon steel production would bring significant benefit to the UK economy.
Steel recycling through electric arc furnaces can retain a crucial and valuable domestic resource within the UK. The UK generates 10 million tonnes of scrap steel each year, 80% of which is exported. Recycled domestically, this scrap could satisfy much of the country’s demand for 15 million tonnes of fresh steel annually.
GFG’s GREENSTEEL is already used in demanding industry-wide operations.
GFG’s LIBERTY Steel Group is already involved in GREENSTEEL operations, recycling and melting scrap steel in an electric arc furnace at its Rotherham mill. The steel produced is used across the aerospace, oil & gas, automotive and motorsport industries. Every three seconds, a civil aircraft with an undercarriage made from recycled steel at Rotherham lands around the world.
GFG GREENSTEEL combines a fully-integrated industrial and energy operation.
GFG is already pursuing a fully integrated GREENSTEEL model, seeking to produce steel from recycled scrap powered by renewable energy. GFG-owned SIMEC Energy and part-owned SIMEC Atlantis are developing renewable energy projects such as the Glenshero wind farm and Uskmouth biomass conversion to provide GFG industrial assets with low-carbon sources of power.
